French-Algerian Singer Lolo Zouai To Release A New Album In October

Lolo Zouai fans rejoice when the French-Algerian singer revealed last week that she is releasing a new album on Oct 14.

Laureen Rebeha Zouai, famously known as Lolo Zouai, is a French-born American R&B and pop musician. Born to a French mother and an Algerian father in Paris, France. Zouai moved to San Francisco, California when she was three months old.

In 2013, she graduated from Lowell High school and later partnered with RCA Records and Because Music to release her debut album, High Highs to Low Lows, in 2019. The album was given a 7.5 out of 10 rating by Pitchfork, while gaining a wider audience with over 50 million streams worldwide.

In the summer of 2018, while independently releasing a series of singles including “Blue,” “Desert Rose,” and “Brooklyn Love,” Lolo performed sold out headlines in Toronto, New York, Los Angeles, Paris, and London.

That same year, in October, she toured in support of Alina Baraz before ending the year with another sold out headline tour in Europe.

A week after her debut album’s release, Lolo set out on a 22-city North American headline tour, followed by a summer full of festival shows across the US, Canada, Europe, and Asia and a string of appearances at New York and Paris Fashion week.

A month later, Lolo set out on the 17-city European leg of the High Highs to Low Lows tour.

She was featured as “one to watch” by The Guardian in April 2019. She also co-wrote “Still Down” from H.E.R.’s self-titled album, which won a Grammy award for Best R&B Album.

Throughout her formative years, Zouai’s family did enough to get by. She went to a public school in Haight-Ashbury on a scholarship transferring to state school after other students harassed her about her family’s financial situation. Her class commentary is threaded through her work, which is refreshingly upfront about the realities of being broke. Zouai’s music is less about the change from rags to riches, and more about the ways in which living like that stays with you.

“I’m such a broke person at heart,” she says. “If I use too much shampoo, I’ll put some back in the bottle.”

Lolo usually spends her time between Brooklyn and Los Angeles.

On Wednesday, Sept 16, the singer shared on her Instagram handle how she feels about her new music.

She said, “I cannot believe it is all finally happening. After my first album I genuinely thought I could not make another. It took me a long time to understand what I wanted to say with my music while I was growing and changing with the world.”

She also added that, “Now that it is coming out I can finally say that I am SO SO proud of what we made and all the work put in to creating this record. I love it with all my heart and hope you will too.”

The singer thanked everyone involved in making this album a success as it features both upbeat music and sad songs. She believes that her fans will want to dance and cry while listening to it.

Her music has a way to communicates the presence of many different feelings at once, the internal accounting of emotions that can make joy sweep into vulnerability in an instant.

“One day, I would be really excited about life and another day I’d want to sleep all day. One day, I was being flown out on JetBlue Mint to Los Angeles for a meeting, the next day I was working at Bareburger, living in my mom’s apartment. One day I had a million streams, the same day I had -$7 in my bank account.” says Zouaï of her shifting moods during her record’s writing.

The forthcoming album which is titled “Play Girl,” is currently available for pre-saves.
