The Mercury Prize, British music’s most prestigious award has nominated Harry Styles for the first time in his career. The 30 th anniversary of the Mercury Prize includes a list of first-time nominees.
Harry Styles’s album Harry’s House was nominated for this prestigious award as the most commercially-successful album of the year having spent six of the last nine weeks at number one.
The first single of the album “As It Was” was dropped on April 1 while the remaining songs were released in May of this year. On the morning of April 29, Harry’s Styles official Instagram fan page @hshq released the album’s tracklist.
Before releasing the album, Harry Styles told Better Homes and Gardens that his album is “by far the most intimate” album he has written.
The annual award which celebrates the best British or Irish album of the year will take place on 8 September, the night of the Mercury Prize ceremony.
Harry Styles’s Harry House was short-listed for the 2022 Mercury Prize along with 11 other albums.
His third solo album will be competing for the British music award with Sam Fender’s Seventeen Going Under, Little Simz’s Sometimes I Might Be Introvert, and others.
Seven of the 12 short-listed albums are dominated by women or mixed groups that are led by Little Simz. The latter is the only nominee to have previously been nominated to the Mercury in 2019 with her third album Grey Area.
Simz’s second album Sometimes I Might Be Introvert was widely considered one of the best British album of 2021 having reached No 4 on the UK albums chart.
It is also worth noting that The Isle of Wight indie-rock duo Wet Leg is among a handful of acts that were nominated for their debut album.
This year’s award’s nomination also includes Joy Crookes for her long-awaited debut album Skin which was released five years after her earliest singles. The London songwriter of Bangladeshi and Irish heritage has according to Observer’s Alim Kheraj created a record that is vibrant, urgent, and brimming with life.
The 2022 Mercury Prize will be held at London’s Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith and tickets for the event are already available for purchase.
Harry House is also very likely to be nominated for the album of the year at the Grammy Awards and British album of the year at the Brit Awards.
