In the last few years, Afrobeats earned a huge spot in the global music space, especially in the United States. From winning the Grammy (the most prestigious music award in the world) to earning platinum and gold certifications for its singles. Some of the songs that have earned certifications in the United States include Essence by Wizkid featuring Tems, Love Nwantiti by CKay, Ye/On The Low by Burna Boy and more.
Afrobeats is deservingly earning its spot in the global music conversation, one song at a time and Wizkid’s latest achievement is an attestation. Wizkid has unlocked a new milestone as his 4th studio album ‘Made In Lagos’ gets a RIAA gold certification in the United States, setting the record for the first-ever African artist to achieve this remarkable feat.
The ‘Made In Lagos‘ album has been eligible for a gold certification for a while now after selling 500,000 units, according to sources but was finally certified on August 25th 2022 by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
This is just one of the many remarkable milestone stones Wizkid has crossed in his career. Just six months ago, his smash hit record ‘Essence‘ featuring Tems became the first ever and only Afrobeats song to go 2x platinum in the United States. Although CKay’s ‘Love Nwantiti‘ is rumoured to have sold 2 million units, it hasn’t been certified yet by the RIAA and is only certified platinum at the moment.
‘Made In Lagos‘ was initially released back in 2020. Counting a wholesome 14 tracks, the album features guest appearances by Burna Boy, Ella Mai, Skepta Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley, Tems, Tay Iwar, Projexx and Terri. Months later, Wizkid rolled out a deluxe edition adding 4 more tracks, totalling the track count at 18. He also enlisted BNXN and Justin Bieber as featured guests on the deluxe edition.
