As the go gets going, Africa to the world is now more literal than metaphorical. 10 years ago, who would’ve thought Afrobeats artists will be shaking up the biggest stages in the world; as Burna Boy and Wizkid have done with their various concerts at arenas in major cities of the world like Madison Square Garden in New York City, 02 Arena in London, Accor Arena in France amongst many others. And now, the latest in this category is Davido’s historical performance at the FIFA World Cup finale in Qatar.

Recall that the Nigerian superstar was enlisted alongside Trinidad Cardona and Aisha on the official FIFA World Cup theme song ‘Hayya Hayya (Better Together)‘ which was released back in April. His efforts have finally come to fruition as he seals it with a mind-blowing performance at the FIFA World Cup final at the Lusial Stadium in Lusail, Qatar. The final was between Argentina and France with Lionel Messi’s Argentina taking the day, marking the third world cup win in their history and the first since the legendary Maradona led them to victory in 1986.

Davido has been unobtrusive in the last few months due to the tragic event regarding the loss of his son in early November. His first major appearance on camera since the tragic event was at the inauguration ceremony of his uncle Ademola Adeleke as the Governor of Osun State in Nigeria. Now, he seems to be getting back to his regular form as he promises to be back in March, as seen in his latest tweet.

Davido’s performance will mark the first of an Afrobeats artist at the FIFA World Cup closing ceremony and one of the few to perform at the World Cup (opening and closing ceremony). It is a historical feat for Afrobeats as the genre keeps winning hearts from various angles of the globe.

Davido’s name will be engraved alongside other iconic acts like Shakira, Imagine Dragons, Ricky Martin, Wyclef Jean, K’naan, Jeniffer Lopez, Pitbull, Will Smith, Nicky Jam, and others as artists who have performed at the FIFA World Cup.
