Grammy award-winning singer, Taylor Swift has released a classic new video for her song “Bejeweled.”
The video is the second visual from her latest album, Midnights which dropped on Friday, October 21. Directed by Taylor Swift herself the video is a funny take on the Cinderella story in which there is a hunt to win the prince’s heart and the castle.
Swift plays the role of the tired, wrenching-looking but beautiful sister as seen in the classic 1950 movie who is constantly tortured by her stepmother and sisters. The video features cameo appearances from Laura Dern who plays the role of her wicked stepmother, the Haim sisters as the evil stepsisters, Pat McGrath as the Queen, Jack Antonoff as the Prince, and Dita Von Teese, the queen of Burlesque as the Fairy Goddess.
The video begins with Taylor Swift cleaning and scrubbing while her stepsisters and step-mum gist about the upcoming ball and how to woe the prince. She sneaks out after they all leave. The magic happens that transforms her into a beautiful shimmery attire suitable to wear to the ball. She joins the talent hunt and soon enough impresses the queen. The video takes a different turn to the original Cinderella story as a description reads at the end, “the prince was forced to propose to the House Wench Taylor, she ghosted. But kept the castle.”
Swift spoke about the thought process that led to the video to Jimmy Fallon of the Tonight Show. “I wanted to make a video that’s just for the fans who like certain things like glitter and Easter eggs and lots of little cameos,” she started. “So basically I was thinking about Midnights, the concept, and I was like where do we hear about midnights a lot? We hear about it a lot when we talk about the Cinderella fairy tale and so I was like what if we did a little twist on a Cinderella story and I could cast my friends?”
Having been directed by Taylor Swift, the Bejeweled video shows Taylor’s creative storytelling and artistry which makes for a talented artist that stays true to her craft.
Swift released Midnights, her 10th studio album, on Friday, October 21. Hours later, she shared seven additional new songs, dubbed the 3 am edition. She also shared the video for Anti-Hero, where she spends a raucous night out with Taylor Swift.
