Top 5 Rappers In Nigeria’s Music Industry
Although, hip-hop is still struggling to find its feet in the Nigreria’s music industry, but there are some rappers who dominated the country and beyond with a good rap music.
Here is the list of top five rappers in the Nigeria’s music industry:
1. M.I Abaga
Jude Lemfani Abaga who’s famously known as M.I Abaga, is a Nigerian rapper and record producer. He rose to prominence in 2006 when his song “Crowd Mentality” became popular in Jos, Nigeria. His debut studio album Talk About It was released in 2008. The LP was succeeded by MI2: The Movie (2010). Four years later, he released The Chairman as his third studio album. Abaga released the playlist Rendezvous in February 2018. In August of that year, he released his fourth studio album A Study On Self-Worth: YXNG
DXZNL.
He is one of the best rappers in Nigeria with a huge fan base. Without a doubt, he is gifted. He also has a way with words, which allows him to compose great raps that have taken the Nigeria’s music industry by storm.
His unique ability to manipulate words is always evident in his compositions as he usually comes up with new slangs, which people pick up on and turn into national anthems.
M.I. has been responsible for bringing out many upcoming artists such as Phyno, Wizkid, Vypa, Jesse Jagz, Ruby, Pype, Tone Ice Prince, Brymo, and Khali Graph Jones. He has been described by many Nigerian hip hop fans as Nigeria’s “Hip Hop Messiah.”
He has also done a lot to bring a Northern presence to the Nigerian music industry, as he depicts the perfect example of bringing Nigeria together.
However, M.I was appointed a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador in 2012. He also supports the Jostified campaign and have achieved worldwide recognition as part of the vanguard of the “Afrobeats” wave.
Abaga have also won numerous awards such as the Headies, BET, MTV, and others.
2. OLAMIDE
Olamide Gbenga Adedeji is a Nigerian rapper and singer. He is recognized as one of the biggest and most influential artists in Africa. He records in Yoruba and English. In 2011, he released his debut studio album Rapsodi, while signed to Coded Tunes. YBNL, his follow-up album, was released under his label imprint “Yahoo Boy No Laptop” aka YBNL Nation. The album was supported by the singles “First of All”, “Voice of the Street”, “Stupid Love”, and “Ilefo Illuminati”.
Also, on 7 November 2013, he released his third studio album Baddest Guy Ever Liveth. The album’s singles include “Durosoke” and “Yemi My Lover.”
In the year 2013, Olamide became the first Nigerian to sign an endorsement deal with Cīroc.
Olamide who is commonly referred to as Badoo is undoubtedly a talented rapper who enjoys rapping in his native Yoruba language. It is this factor that distinguishes him as the best.
MTV Base named Olamide the Hottest Rapper in 2015.
In Nigeria, Olamide have a good fan base. His debut album, Eyan Maywhether is still popular today within the Nigeria’s music scene.
3. PHYNO
Chibuzor Nelson Azubuike better known as Phyno Fino, is a Nigerian rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer. He started his music career as a producer in 2003, and is renowned for rapping in the Igbo language. His debut studio album No Guts No Glory was released in 2014. It was supported by four singles: “Ghost Mode”, “Man of the Year”, “Parcel” and “O Set”. Before that he recorded singles like “What are you waiting for” and ” Multiply” featuring M.I, Mr. Raw, Timaya and MI Abaga.
Phyno has worked with artists such as Olamide, Wizkid, Davido, Timaya, Flavour, Ruggedman, Bracket, J.Martins and Mr Raw.
He is undeniably capable of rapping, and he has one of Nigeria’s largest fan bases. He not only raps, but he also sings very well.
One of his songs is titled Connect, and it was a hit. For several weeks, the song was ranked among the best in Nigeria.
Phyno has a number of singles to his credit. Connect, Oringo, and Nnene are a few examples. These songs established him as a major force in the Nigerian music industry.
4. FALZ
Folarin Falana better known by his stage name Falz, is a Nigerian rapper, songwriter and actor. He began his career while in secondary school after forming a group called The School Boys with his friend before his professional career as a music artist began in 2009. Falz became more well-known after releasing the song “Marry Me” featuring vocals from Poe and Yemi Alade.
He is a household name in the Nigerian rap industry. In recent years, he has established himself as a great rapper with good lyrics. Aside from being a rapper, he is also a comedian, which adds to his fan base.
Falz is known for posting hilarious Instagram videos that make people laugh out loud. Some of his fans believe he should abandon rapping and pursue a career in comedy. Regardless, he is a top-tier and highly talented Nigerian rapper who deserves some accolades.
5. VECTOR
Olanrewaju Ogunmefun, who’s known by his stage name Vector, is a Nigerian rapper and songwriter. He has released three studio albums, including State of Surprise and The Second Coming (2012).
He is known in Nigeria as a representative of the American Jayz. This is because his voice is similar to that of the American rapper. He is highly respectable in the rap industry. He has also collaborated with a few of other Nigerian rappers, where he collaborated with Reminisce to create the song King Kong, which won a Headies award in 2016.
Vector is one of the most famous rappers in Nigeria today with a promising career.
