Wizkid As The Most Nominated Artist For 2022 Headies Awards

The multiple award winner and Nigeria’s most celebrated international musician, who is known by the stage name Wizkid was the most nominated artist at the just concluded 2022 Headies Awards.

The 2022 edition has brought in some new sets of categories added to the lists of nominations which includes the International Artiste of the Year, a section for non-African artistes with the most outstanding achievements and influence on Afrobeats.

The nominees includes: Beyoncé, Chris Brown, Drake, Ed Sheeran, Justin Beiber, and Nas. Other new categories included Best Afrobeat Pop Single (Nigeria), Best Afrobeat Pop Album (Nigeria), Best African Collaboration, Best International Collaboration, African Artist of the Year, International Artist of the Year, and Music Executive of the Year.

Wizkid who was nominated in 10 categories for the 2022 edition of the awards, has won 5 of the nominations. This could not have been accomplished if not for his Made in Lagos album and global hit song ‘Essence’ featuring Nigerian songstress, Tems.

The Nigerian Afrobeat singer has wrote his name in the history book of the Headies Awards after taking his tally of the Headies awards to 20, becoming the first person to do so since the inception of the award in 2007.

This was coming after the legendary rapper, Kanye West posted on his Instagram page that Wizkid’s song ‘Essence’ is the best song in the history of music to date.

However, he has become the most decorated artist after winning the song of the year for (Essence) ft Tems, best collaboration (Essence) ft Tems, best R&B single (Essence) ft Tems, best Afrobeats album (Made in Lagos ) and Album of the year (Made in Lagos deluxe edition).

The Nigerian superstar, who was not present at the event was ably represented by his manager, Sunday Are, who expressed appreciation on his behalf to the organizers of the event and the entire fans of the Afrobeats star known as Wizkid FC.

However, Olamide, Davido, Burna, BNXN, Adekunle Gold, and others also won individual awards at the event which took place outside Nigeria for the first time.

The Next Rated award was awarded to BNXN (BUJU) ahead of other fast-rising youngsters like Zinoleesky, Ruger, and Ayra Starr.

While receiving his plaque, Buju gave an emotional speech, dedicating the award to God and then to his late mom who had died of breast cancer. He has also won a 2022 Bentley ride and he jokingly requested for the ride to be transported to Nigeria

Special recognition awards were also given to entrepreneur, Efe Omeregbe, Sunday Are (Wizkid’s Manager), and Bose Ogulu (Burna Boy’s Mother).

Five times Grammy award winner, Angelique Kidjo was honoured with the Hall of Fame award and the legendary musician, D’banj also got awarded with the Recognition (Talent) trophy.

The 2022 Headies Award was held on September 4, at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre in Atlanta, Georgia, United States.

It was hosted by Nollywood actress Osas Ighodaro and Hollywood Actor Anthony Andersen, viewers enjoyed live performances from Ruger, Ladipoe, Flavour and others.
